Our Story
Why we built tolr
After 10 years as a metrology tech, metrology engineer, then lab manager and 1,000s of FAIs later, we finally got so sick of ballooning and typing out the dimensions of each drawing. This was about the time in 2024 when AI was really starting to take off, so we thought "there has to be some AI company out there that can automatically balloon and extract drawings". Well, it turns out, we were wrong - extracting dimensions from a ballooned print turns out to be very difficult without a local LLM. After searching for weeks and multiple demos, we came to realize that the 3 or 4 companies that can read and balloon prints are legacy brands that have been around for 20 years with outdated architecture. Their UI was annoying, the cost was astronomical, they were slow, and we had to wait 2 weeks for IT to approve our download. In the end, we just kept ballooning and dimensioning manually for the remainder of 2024.
After the new year I came back to my desk with 10 FAIs that had over 200 dimensions each and spent the entire week ballooning, literally 40 hours of data entry. I couldn't take it anymore, so we set out to create our own automatic ballooning and dimensioning software.
A year and a half later and hundreds of tests, we are so excited to finally release it to the public. My entire adult professional life has been spent in a quality lab, and I can honestly say Tolr is the best thing to happen to my own workflow. I'm able to skip the data entry, and free up 20 hours a month just for myself.
We set to improve as much as we could on the legacy brands: faster dimensioning, more accurate placement, and a simpler UI. I believe that we have far exceeded any of our competitors in those metrics, I hope that you make the decision to use Tolr in your workflow and experience it for yourself!
